چکیده

Since October 2004, a Frequency Modulated– Continuous Wave (FM–CW) ionosonde chain along the magnetic meridian has been operating in Southeast Asia, in Kototabang (0.2 S, 100.3 E), Indonesia, Chumphon (10.7 N, 99.4 E), Thailand, and Chiang Mai (18.8 N, 98.9 E), Thailand. Variations in the virtual height of the bottomside of the F-region (hF ) at 2.5 MHz were analyzed, in order to study the day-to-day variability of plasma bubble occurrence for the periods of October 2004 and March–April 2005. When plasma bubbles were generated, hF was enhanced at the three stations. However, even when hF at the equatorial station, Chumphon, was largely enhanced, plasma bubbles were not generated when a noticeable north-south asymmetry of hF existed. This asymmetry could be attributed to the transequatorial thermospheric wind. Our results show that the strong transequatorial thermospheric wind can suppress the plasma bubble generation and is one of the important factors which controls the day-to-day variability of plasma bubble occurrences.

Variation of ionospheric slab thickness over South Africa

Ionospheric slab thickness is defined as the ratio of TEC to maximum electron density of the F-region (NmF2), proportional to the square of the F2-layer critical frequency (foF2). It is an important parameter in that it is linearly correlated with scale height of the ionosphere, which is related to electron density profile. It also reflects variation of the neutral temperature. Therefore, ionos...

Auroral Electrojets and 3d Currents in the Ionosphere-magnetosphere System

There are shortly described results of the analysis of variations in the location and intensity of the auroral electrojets during magnetic storms and substorms using a numerical method for estimating the equivalent ionospheric currents based on data from meridian chains of magnetic observatories. It is shown that the westward electrojet adjoins to the polar electrojet located at cusp latitudes ...

Combining Neural Network with Genetic Algorithm for prediction of S4 Parameter using GPS measurement

The ionospheric plasma bubbles cause unpredictable changes in the ionospheric electron density. These variations in the ionospheric layer can cause a phenomenon known as the ionospheric scintillation. Ionospheric scintillation could affect the phase and amplitude of the radio signals traveling through this medium. This phenomenon occurs frequently around the magnetic equator and in low latitu...

Ionospheric Responses to the July 15 - 16 , 2000 Magnetic Storm around Geographic Longitude 121 E

This study presents observed behavior of ionospheric responses using vertical total electron contents (VTEC) and NmF2. The data were collected from global positioning system (GPS) networks and ionosondes around the geographic longitude of 121 E from midto low-latitudes for the severe magnetic storm on 15 July 2000. The results show that the severe magnetic storm caused significant density deple...

LION: A dynamic computer model for the low-latitude ionosphere

A realistic fully time-dependent computer model, denominated LION (Low-latitude Ionospheric) model, that simulates the dynamic behavior of the low-latitude ionosphere is presented. The time evolution and spatial distribution of the ionospheric particle densities and velocities are computed by numerically solving the time-dependent, coupled, nonlinear system of continuity and momentum equations ...
